Cooking with Liam: Locke reviews local food truck Bon Me

By: Liam Locke

The Bon Me food truck has been roaming Boston's streets since 2011.

Alright, my obsession with this food truck started when the newspaper club went on a field trip to the Boston Herald.  After we were done with the tour of the Herald our club went to a spot in the middle of Boston to get something to eat for lunch before we headed back to school.

There was a really wide variety of food trucks at this spot in Boston including a pizza truck with a wood fire burning pizza oven. But that is not why we are here today. Out of the wide variety of trucks there was one that caught my eye the most. This truck was the Bon Me food truck.

This truck has a wide range of gourmet Asian food options. You can have a bon me sandwich with your choice of filling, a noodle salad, a rice bowl, or a salad. There are also many different minor things you can add to these major menu options.

The item I got was a bon me sandwich with miso braised pulled pork filling. If you are unfamiliar with miso it is fermented soybeans. This is a popular seasoning in Japanese food. Anyway back to that bon me sandwich I got; along with my filling every sandwich comes with pickled carrots and daikon, cucumber, red onion, cilantro, their house made spicy mayo, and a slice of pork pate. If you are unfamiliar with pate it is the scraps of in this case a pig grinded up with a lot of fat to make a silky and smooth consistency paste and then it is put into a pan in the shape of a brick and refrigerated until it is firm enough to slice up like a cake.

Let me tell you something though; that sandwich was the best sandwich I have ever tasted.  It was a flavor bomb and all of the flavors worked tremendously together. The spicy mayo was calmed down by the acid of the pickled carrots and daikon, the cilantro was a great touch for a lot of extra flavor, the red onion and cucumber worked really well together, and the filling of the miso braised pulled pork was the thing that tied everything together.

Now that I have had a proper bon me sandwich I won’t be going back to regular sandwiches ever again.

You can check out the Bon Me food truck at bonmetruck.com. Their scheduled locations throughout the week are available here. Enjoy!
