"From Malden, MA, it's MVRCS!": Mystic Valley competes in local quiz bowl competition

Since 2009, High School Quiz Show has run eight strong seasons on WGBH. The program, hosted by Billy Costa, takes four to six of the brightest from sixteen schools across the state and puts them head to head in contests that test their intelligence.

Seniors Sarah Desantis, Ashley Martorana, Julia Powers, and Amanda Sutherland celebrated their MV Varsity season on October 26 by dancing through a tunnel formed by other teammates, on their way to having photos taken with family and friends.

Nguyen: Dissecting this fall's presidential debates

After watching all three presidential debates, I felt as if I could see the personalities/morals of the candidate's’ supporters. Both candidates (Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump) also revealed their true colors during the debates, and affected opinions that many people had about the candidates’ characters. An iconic example of this would be Kenneth Bone, who made his debut in the second presidential debate as one of the undecided voters (who just also happened to look like a character from Toy Story 2). Bone mentioned in a phone interview that he was leaning towards Trump at first, but after participating in the debate, Hillary “really impressed me with her composure and some of her answers” and that he was “a little let down” by Trump’s personal attacks towards Hillary.

The disparity between high school and college athletics can be immense. Not only are students older and more experienced in terms of talent when they reach the college level, institutions have a larger pool of players to draw from when it comes to recruiting than a typical high school. As such, it is often an exciting development when a high school student is invited to play at the college level, as is the case with Mystic Valley senior football player Sydney Guerrier.
